Discipline Beats Vision with Dane Hudson

Vision matters.

It gives people direction and helps them understand where the business is going.

But vision on its own is not enough.

Someone still has to turn that vision into decisions, behaviour, accountability and action.

That was one of the strongest themes in my recent conversation with Dane Hudson, an international business leader with more than 20 years of corporate CEO experience.

Dane describes leadership as a craft. It is something you keep learning, practising and refining as the business grows.

Build your leadership toolkit

Early in his career, Dane started keeping a record of the leaders he worked with.

What would he copy? What would he avoid? What made one leader effective while another struggled?

Over time, he was deliberately building his leadership toolkit.

It is a useful reminder that leadership development is not about copying somebody else’s personality. It is about observing what works, understanding why it works and finding a way to apply it authentically.

Trust comes before accountability

Businesses talk a lot about accountability, but accountability is difficult to build without trust.

Dane’s advice is simple. Stay connected to the business. Know your people. Learn their names. Walk through the workplace. Understand what is actually happening rather than relying only on reports and meetings.

As organisations grow, leaders can become increasingly removed from the people doing the work.

But trust is usually built through small, consistent actions. And when trust is strong, accountability becomes much easier to create.

Culture is what leaders do

Culture
is not simply a list of values written on a wall.

It is what people see leaders doing every day.

Dane talks about the “shadow of the leader”. People notice what gets recognised, what gets ignored and what leaders are willing to tolerate.

If respect is one of your values, what happens when a high performer treats people badly?

If honesty matters, what happens when telling the truth could cost the business money?

Those moments shape culture far more than another presentation about company values.

Different people need different leadership

Dane also shared what he calls the “platinum rule”.

Instead of only treating people the way you would like to be treated, understand how they need to be led.

One person may want clear direction and plenty of freedom. Another may want more discussion before moving forward.

Strong leadership means understanding what motivates people, how they communicate and where they need either support or space.

Your leadership has to scale too

This is particularly important for founders.

A founder may become extremely good at the product, the customer or the market. Then the business grows and the job changes.

Now the leader needs to delegate, build a leadership team, create accountability, work with a board and recruit people who may be better than them in certain areas.

Dane describes strong leaders as relentless students.

Founders need to bring the same appetite for learning to leadership that they brought to building the business.

Because if the company grows faster than the leader, eventually the leader can become the constraint.

Resilience comes through experience

Some leadership lessons cannot be learned from a course or framework.

Dane spoke openly about difficult situations he faced while leading in South Africa and how those experiences helped build resilience.

Resilience does not mean difficult situations stop affecting you.

It means you begin to recognise that you have worked through hard things before and can draw on that experience again.

Experience can also create humility. The longer we lead, the more we often realise how much we still have to learn.

Leaders need support too

Leadership can become lonely when everyone expects you to have the answer.

Dane spoke about the importance of his wife, Melinda, throughout his career, while we also discussed the value of mentors, coaches, advisory boards and trusted peer groups.

Leaders need people around them who can listen, challenge their thinking and occasionally tell them something they may not want to hear.

Discipline turns vision into action

Vision is important. Strategy is important. Ambition is important.

But none of them execute themselves.

Leadership shows up in what happens afterwards.

Do people know what they are responsible for? Do leaders follow through? Are the values reflected in real decisions? Are capable people given enough room to lead?

That is where discipline matters.

Dane’s career is a useful reminder that leadership is never really finished.

You observe. You learn. You make mistakes. You adjust. The business changes. Then you learn again.

Perhaps that is the real idea behind Discipline Beats Vision.

Vision tells people where you want to go.

Discipline is what helps you get there.
